Directed by Lee Davis, Bilal breaks the mold of music videos to show off his acting talent in this short film for his new single “West Side Girl” off of A Love Surreal. Evoking the spirit of Blaxpoitation flicks (and Tarantino’s hilarious “the Royal with Cheese” dialogue), ”West Side Girl” is a snapshot into the surreal world of two LA undercover officers tangled up in desire, dreams and deception.
According to New York Times’ Jon Pareles “Bilal and the Roots turned “Sister” — a punky one-and-a-half-minute ditty about incest from Prince’s “Dirty Mind” album — into an elaborately dramatic mini-suite that kept shifting tempos and genres, sometimes from one line to the next, up to a screeching peak.” Read the rest of the review here.
Rolling Stones’ writer Michaelangleo Matos thoughts on Bilal’s rendition of Prince’s Sister at the Carnegie Hall Prince Tribute featuring the likes of Elvis Costello, D’Angelo, the Roots, Chris Rock, and others:
“R&B crooner Bilal, though, went the furthest out, on what may still be the furthest-out song Prince has written: “Sister,” a 93-second ode to brotherly-sisterly love from 1980′s Dirty Mind. Bilal ran through the song through an iPod playlist’s worth of styles, from dramatic art-rock to slow blues and then, finally, back to the frenetic original new wave arrangement. It was a tour de force that many in the audience were talking about after the lights went up.” Read the full review here.
The follow-up to Part 1, the second installment to the Welcome To A Love Surreal mini-documentary, where Bilal gets to talk about what it was like to collaborate with some of the album’s guests - namely KING, Shafiq Husayn, Robert Glasper, engineer Commissioner Gordon Williams & photographer Marc Baptiste.
was the artwork of Salvador Dali. The cover for A Love Surreal is a new take on Dali’s photo, where the skull -a symbol of death- is transformed into a flower of life.
